Client Brief:
Haptic wall with focus on combining technology with coziness through a 3D knit surface, creating a different perception from up close and the distance.
Color gradient in harmony with the environment and a geometrical artwork underlining BMW’s design language. Sustainability in resources and manufacturing process.

Challenges:
• Textile specs for public spaces, e.g. fire retardancy
• Limited fire restistant yarn colors to create the design
• Artwork height of +8m: Knit file size limitations
• Balancing flat & haptic 3D surface in the design
• Fabric shrinkage & stretch in a knitted 3D fabric
• Calculating accurate dimensions for the builders

Project Outcome & Solution:
The design and technical challenges of the the ‘haptic wall’ were solved through calculation, testing & splitting the artwork in separately knitted textiles, navigating operational restrictions with multiple stakeholders through proactive collaboration.
